Down but not out

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Some of you may be wondering what the heck has been going on with this site. Well… a lot of things. First off I am none to happy with my migration to a new host as things definitely did not go to plan. But not caring to share the details, I am indeed, back!

So long… uh… old host

It’s been a solid run for almost two years but ever since Marketing (or so it appears) got their hands on my hosting, they’ve been offering a whopping terabye of disk space and 2 terabytes of data transfer per month. Um. Right. Or so they say. Not too much longer after that little fiasco I began experiencing several timeouts, 500’s (Internal Server Errors) and loss of database connections. They may have a 99.998% uptime aggregate, but that doesn’t include the amount times things just don’t work. However that wasn’t even the end of it. At one point I lost about 12 hours of data (the case of the dissappearing comments) from my database and I was never even informed through an email that this happened. On more than 10 occassions (I can honestly say 10) my stats broke and they failed to record some hi-level days. I was looking forward to seeing how well UDASSS would fair on the day after its launch but to my unfortunate haphazard my host reported zero hits and zero visitors and claimed all statistics were accurate during those times. Bull caca-doohicky.

What gives with the podcasting?

I do in fact have a brilliant line-up of guests coming up in the next coming weeks so you’ll be happy to know that this indeed was not a fluke that I thought up one day. I had a blast recording the pilot episode - granted I know it was pretty rough around the edges and has plenty of room for improvement. With that in mind, please stay subcribed! Also, if you haven’t seen it already, you can subscribe directly with iTunes with the link on the footer of this website. So until next time, thanks for bearing with me through the upgrade. I’m back!

Welcome back buddy! The blogosphere felt a lot colder with you gone. :)

  2. Binny

I figured that part. Only that would explain the fact that you have still not commented about Yahoo! UI Library

Good luck with your new host.

  3. Ryan Brooks

w00t! Glad to see you back.

  4. Dustin Diaz

Binny, oh I’ve got plenty of stuff to say about that - don’t you worry :)

    I mean afterall, I’m on the YUIBlog(roll)

  5. Elliot Swan

So who’d you end up with? I’ve been thinking of switching to dreamhost with their 1TB of bandwidth…hopefully they’re not going to have the same problem.

  6. Justin Perkins

I’m just as curious as Elliot, who with now? Yahoo hosting for ya?

  7. Edward J. S. Atkinson

Aaaand there aren’t anymore advertisements! I really like that :-D. It’s faster, less clutter, and just much…much nicer.

    Dustin,

I’m so glad to see the site is up and running again!

@Elliot, I use DreamHost and have no complaints. They keep upping the bandwidth and storage quotas so it keeps getting better IMO.

  9. Nick Presta

@Eden, just wait until they shut you down for using up “too much CPU usage”. There is no possible way you can use all the bandwidth they give you. You get shut down for “abusing server resources”.

If you read Dreamhost’s AUP/TOS they only allow for 60min cpu usage per day. That’s actually a decent amount, but I’d like to know what type of math they’re using where you could push a whole TB of transfer through that amount of CPU utilization.

Anyways, Dustin, glad to hear things are (sorta) good and running now. I await your next Podcast.

According to Whois you’re with Dreamhost, do I win a prize?

You owe me anyway cos I listened to the end of Podcasts 1 + 2 so far… it wasn’t just your mum(s) ;-)
