Episode 10: Microformats, Drew, and lots of beer

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

For a lack of a better title, in this episode Drew McLellan and I had the chance to discuss the evolving technology of microformats along with quite a few of his other sites like Dreamweaver Fever and 24ways. Other than that, we discussed some of the latest news going on around the web such as Dan’s DOM Builder and William’s Firefox extension guide, and of course played another classic game of Pryamid 2.0 where I failed miserably (again).

That was a great podcast. The introduction was amazing *cough*releaseitasaringtoneandiwillbuyit*cough*

31minutes and 30seconds into it was also a great moment.

Can’t wait for the next one!

  2. Dan Webb

Mate, that intro is extremely weird. What about doing the whole podcast in that style?

  3. Dustin Diaz

@Sirbastian: A ringtone eh? I don’t know about this intro… but I could release the main intro beat as a ringtone… but this one… as Dan said… was kind of wierd.

@Dan: Yea. doing the entire ‘cast that way… we’d sound like a bunch of 12 year old geniuses.

Is there more to life then beer?

  5. Jared

This was a celestial intro, maybe cut back a little on the reverb man, maybe some panning next time …

    God bless webstandards.

  6. Dustin Diaz

the reverb came from the striking zapper gun in the beginning :p. But yea. I hear ya. Did you learn anything useful at the least?

  7. Jared

Yeah, the force better be with us, oh Jedi Knights of Task Forces anywhere …

In regards to running Firefox on a Mac, I highly recommend Firefox 2.0 (Bon Echo). It uses native mac form elements and has been ported to run on Intel macs natively (Firefox 1.5 on Mactel runs through rosetta).

    Still no spell checker though.

Thanks Justin. That’s going to help a lot. I love firefox too much to drop it for safari on the account that it’s too slow.

  10. Elliot Swan

    Ever tried >BBEdit?

I’ve never tried it (as I don’t have a Mac…yet), but I’ve heard that a lot of Mac users love it.

Whadaya know. We got another listener. all we gotta do is talk about more people :) - I’m glad you enjoyed our one hour ramble. I hope you didn’t take any offense to me saying that it wasn’t for all users ;) - that is a rather blanket statement when you consider folks like my parents who would probably never use any of those extensions. But they are indeed very great extensions that any web geek would use :)

  13. dustin

    Yay for microformats!

  14. Jonathan Snook

Ha, I love that intro! You need to make that playable off your home page… (okay, back to listening to the rest of it…)

  15. Nathan Smith

Nice intro, though the DOM doesn’t necessarily equal the “behavior layer,” since it can be manipulated by both CSS and JavaScript. The DOM is like a car’s framework. HTML would be the interior, CSS would be the paint job, and JavaScript would be the hydrolics + turbo nitro injectors.

  16. Dustin Diaz

Nathan, I didn’t realize until afterward and I didn’t feel like remixing it. At that point I just wasn’t in the mood anymore. I thought “Hmm.. DOM == behavior?” no no. You’re correct. If anything, I should have said DOM Scripting. That’s what a late night will do to a man and his standards.

By the way, there is no need for the MacTel firefox. Mozilla officially released an off-cycle to support intel macs :)

Great episode, Dustin. The moment of silence was quite funny. I do want to say that I’m sometimes a bit distracted by the background music during the majority of the conversations though. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems to make it a bit harder to pay attention. Perhaps the background music could be a little softer? Then again, maybe it’s just me. I feel like an old person complaining about the music in a restaurant being too loud. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!

  19. Barry

Loved the podcast. Very informative overview of Microformats. I recently subscribed, on Odeo, to your channel and have downloaded all your previous podcasts. Would you consider dropping the background beatbox track though? It makes it hard to concentrate on the content of the cast.

  20. Dustin Diaz

    Hi Barry,
do you mean the background music that plays throughout the episodes, or the main intro? Cuz the intro isn’t going anywhere. But indeed I have been receiving a lot of requests to tune it down a bit on the background music. Other than that, I’m glad you’re enjoying the podcasts :)

  21. Barry

Sorry, I wasn’t explicit in my comment. I meant the background music during cast.

  22. Ali

    Amazing Intro. ;)
