I want to go to @Media 2006

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

Speakers like Dan, Eric, Molly, Jeremy, Stuart, Simon, Peter, Tantek, Andy, Jon, Roger, Dave, Veerle… holy crap - they’re all gonna be there! But damn, 395 GBP?!! I hope they’re importing fresh beans directly from columbia for those coffee breaks. That’s $684 USD per delegate for a two day event. Then again… look who’s going. And hey, when am I going to be invited to speak guys? I wouldn’t mind bouncing around idea’s with Roger about CSS3, or chattin’ it up with Jeremy on progressive enhancement with JavaScript. Maybe they can stick me between Stuart and Simon on the topic of DOM Scripting: The next level. Really. I need to be there. Even if that means spending all my ad money from Y!PN to get there.

Fact is, I just want to kick it with the folks who love this stuff as much as I do. The one’s who still think all this stuff is still cool and worth getting excited over. I want to hear it from the one’s who think on the enterprise level.

I’d like to hear what Ian has to say about accessibility on a level suitable for Yahoo!. How does a team go about doing that? I’d like to hear Molly’s thoughts on how to Internationalize websites without forfeiting the brand. Or what Dan’s ideas are on creating bullet proof websites within legacy code? I want to know it all. I’d like to know these things whether or not they’re out of my scope.

In a way, I feel like most of these folks are family even though I’ve never met with any of them. It’s like I was bread from a cow that produced all these wonderful developers - but Mama is one tit short to spread the love.

All things being said, save a ticket for me guys. I’ll find one way or another to get there.

I’m with ya. Wish I could go too, if only to put a few faces, names and handshakes together. Hang on, I’ll go click a few ads for ya. ;)

Maybe they only want one Yahoo! developer speaking at the conference. Get your employer to foot the bill!

  3. Molly E. Holzschlag

Make Yahoo! send you. They got the pockets. Start workin’ on them now and don’t give up. You never know :)

  4. Alex Leonard

I should do the same. That’s what employers are for!

… unless of course you are your employer. Damn. No chance.

I’m with you Dustin, it’s alot of money … money young freelancers like me can’t afford unfortunately. I’d love to be there to listen to Molly, Dave and Veerle (just to name a few i read daily) but i guess i’ll have to start saving for @media 2007 and listen to the podcasts lateron when they start appearing on the net. It’s a shame and i’m depressed now :(

    Hey Dustin,
I’ll join you for the flight over. I went last year and I wouldn’t miss this year’s event for anything.

For those wondering about the cost: just go. You can use it as a business expense and take a few extra days to visit the land. You’ll meet great people and those connections will last a lifetime.

@media would be great, but I’d be happy if I could just make it to SXSW. I would say I’ll be there next year, but I did that last year. It was a crazy 2005 with all that job switching/relocating/PhD Application madness for Amy and I, but it looks like things will settle out a little in 2006 which will hopefully amount to more travel/fun. Speaking of which, I think we’re going to drive up to Asheville, NC tomorrow for some tubing action. WooHoo!

Overall the price is pretty good. I used to work in the AV and conference industry and even a few years ago 2 day conferences we worked on would cost over £1000 per delegate. That’s the UK for you!

    @Jon & Molly:
I’ll see what I can do about getting the bill taken care of. If anything, the conference and list of speakers itself should be good enough reason. If there is any direction that Y! is headed toward, it’s toward the topics that will be spoken at the conference.

If you think about it… it would really benefit Yahoo! to send me anyway :)

@Chris: Don’t stay so depressed. Just listen to the podcasts like everyone else ;)

@Ted: I’d love to join in the flight over with you. We’ll need to book the flight at the same time using the Y!’s booking tool.

@Jason: You did, in fact, have quite a year last year. Quite a few life changing things going on is not that bad of an excuse. You just take care of yourself, that’s what is most important.

@Stuart: I’m curious as to how many folks from the U.K. will be going in comparison to Americans. Interesting.
