Goodbye Yahoo!; Hello… uhmm… do they still call these things ‘blogs?’”

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

So my time is up with Yahoo!. I’m done, and out; I quit. I met great people and, not so great people. I don’t regret my time there. I learned a lot, I did a lot, and I most certainly will keeping doing more of it; elsewhere.

Unfortunately I’ve neglected my blog, if that is still what we’re calling them these days, and I will be leaving behind some good friends.

What’s Next?

I’ll let you know in due time. I just need some time to relax and take a small vacation.

Till then, I hope to get more active on this here blog thing… Ciao.

    I was actually going to post a comment yesterday asking where you had disappeared to!
    So does this departure from Yahoo mean an end to your YUI posts?
    Prototype (as am sure you know) has launched their new website and is looking stronger than ever if you fancy a change ;)

    Anyways glad to see you back

    It’s good to hear from you again Dustin. Couple o’ questions…

    1. Will you continue to use, demo, and sing the praises of the Yahoo UI Library?
    2. Have you decided on a new site name yet? It’s been “./with Imagination” for a while now.

    Best wishes for your future endeavors.

  17. Jason Beaird

    He’s Alive! Best of luck with the gear shifting and enjoy your vacation. Can’t wait to hear where you’re headed next.

  18. Carson

    Hey Dustin - boy they lost a valuable asset. I have no doubt you’ll be in demand whatever happens.

  19. Ara Pehlivanian

    Wow, sounds like a big decision. Wish you all the best in your future endeavors. :-)

  20. Paul

    Keep in touch,

    Paul

    And thank you too for the boost in confidence. Glad to see you’re still sticking around hermano. We’ll definitely be seeing each other soon.

    @Elliot Swan:
    I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it all. Knowing that folks miss it tells me that it was worthwhile. Thanks :)

    @Wally Punsapy:
    As always bro. Keep doing cool things at Y! Answers… and/or whatever your next endeavor is.

    I’m having an excellent vacation just sitting at my desk. Thanks.

    @Carlton Dickson:
    This place will never die. Anyone with a passion for blogging will always return to it. Thanks for your encouragement :)

    @Aaron Bassett:
    YUI will still bleed in my veins. I’ve invested so much time, good and bad, with the Yahoo! UI library. Plus I know too many of the guys directly involved, so it’s here to stay on my blog. I still believe it’s the world’s best JavaScript library.

    @Cameron Adams:
    Indeed, big things ahead. Including our “going to be” wickedly cool presentation at SxSW.

    @Daniel:
    Thanks man. I’m back.

    @Jonathan Snook:
    It’s working out as I’m typing.

    @Peter Foti:
    Re: “1. Will you continue to use, demo, and sing the praises of the Yahoo UI Library?” - Yes. As mentioned, I still think it’s the best library around. I will continue to try and provide screencasts and prototypes to anyone interested in the library.
    Re: “2. Have you decided on a new site name yet? It’s been “./with Imagination” for a while now.” - Not yet. Sorry.

    @Jason Beaird:
    Hey bro. Glad you came down to visit. I wish we had more time to goof around. Glad we got to spend time briefly. Hope to see you in Austin.

    @Carson:
    It was two days ;) - but I still lost the bet because it had to be done in one.

    @Ara Pehlivanian:
    Indeed, ’twas a big decision. Thanks for your support.

    @Paul:
    I had a blast working with you man. You are definitely one of Smb’s most valuable asset. All the best man.

    @Vince Chew:
    I was at the end of yo… oh nevermind. See ya around man. Will miss ya.

    @Ben Long: Thanks dude. ‘Preciate it.

    @Ron: Ok.

    @Tobie Langel:
    Yep. Big changes ahead. And YUI will still live.

    @Jesper Haug Karsrud:
    Yes, I’m still alive - and it was a big decision. Thanks for the luck.

  27. Roland

    Hey Dustin — working at Yahoo! is a big thing. What you are taking with you is even bigger. Great challenges and success lies ahead .. you’re gonna love the new gig!

  28. wioota

    Yahoo!’s loss is the communities’ gain. I look forward to the posts n ‘casts. Your posts on the self-invoking functions was very timely (only hours after we started puzzling over their use in various places). Very handy and time-saving information.

  29. Tommy Maintz

    Hey Dustin,

    I was already wondering where you had gone. I miss your screencasts/podcasts.

    Btw, have you checked the work done by Jack Slocum?
    He is really taking javascript libraries to a new level in my opinion.

    Maybe this website should become about Ext instead of YUI :p

    Whatever you are going to do I hope you will be more active on this blog again in the future!

  30. Mike Stickel

    Talk about your bomb dropping. Wow! Congrats on the decision and I’m really looking forward to see what you’ll get into next.

  31. Steve Ganz

    Dustin, change is a great thing. Wherever you go and whatever you do, I know it’s going to be good. Best of luck! I’ll see you at SxSW, if not sooner.

  32. kentaromiura

    Hey, good look out there,
    I hope that we see you around
    as soon as possible ;)

  33. Renato Targa

    As an avid reader, I’m glad to hear your blog will be even more active (I don’t agree that you are leaving your blog behind). I’m sorry for Yahoo!, they lost a gifted professional.

    As a matter of fact, I think you has just inspired me to –finally– start something I have been flirting for a long time: blogging (as a very busy developer, I thought I couldn’t handle that). First in Portuguese –I’m from Brazil–, and if it goes well, in English too.

    I wish you had a great vacation and an even better job.

  34. Deny

    congratulation on your decision, dustin.

    enjoy your vacation.
    and feed my rss reader with your great post after that :)
    I’m kinda’ miss it.

  35. Grant Mc

    So now you no longer work at yahoo!, you could tell us all threre scary secrets and things liek that!

  36. Scott Schiller

    Even though I never did officially really meet you, I know I’d see you around campus once in a blue moon. Best of luck out there - not that you’ll need it. You should do just fine. ;)

  37. Eddy Yanto

    I respect your decision. Join google!! :)

  38. Jason Beaird

    So when are you going to give us an update already? I’m sitting on the edge of my seat here. On a personal note, it was fun to visit at Y! and sorry I had to take off so early…perhaps we should have started a food fight in the cafeteria to make it more memorable. Here are a few pics from Amy and I’s West Coast adventures. I still haven’t signed up for SxSW yet (gasp!) because I didn’t know if I would be able to take the time off at work to go and they certainly weren’t going to pay for it. Times are a’changing though. I actually just quit my current job and will be starting with a local company on the 12th (details forthcoming). The reason I bring that up is that the new job gives MUCH more vacation time, so I guess it’s time to get registered. Anyway, looking forward to that update…anytime now. :)

    Dustin,

    I’ve been listening to your podcasts and reading your blogs for the last few months. I have been impressed with your insightful entries. And i’m especially interested in your expertise with YUI, which my company will be converting to in the next couple weeks.

    I currently work for a web startup that is creating a free effortless financial assistant app. We already have funding and are about to start a series A. We need skills web and java engineers.

    I’m sure someone with your experience and expertise could negotiate a decent equity chunk before we do our series A. Check us out at http://www.mymint.com.

    Send me an email msnider@mymint.com if you are interested and i’ll ensure you get an interview.

  49. Yahoo! like America

    [...] As many of you know, I’ve decided to leave America all together, and accept a job at Google. And everyone knows that Google just leaves the world all alone to do as it wants. Yahoo! can be America - flagship of the Earth. Google has moved onto the moon, and I’m proud to jump on that rocket ship. [...]
