Another Google Search Navigator script

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

First let me add this disclaimer. This is an unofficial Google hack. It is after all, a GreaseMonkey hack, and nothing that hasn’t been done before. With that in mind, I whipped up this script in an evening after work while playing with my new Mac Book Pro and learning some of the various key bindings. I’ve learned to hate the on-board tracking pad and I generally like to avoid using a mouse at all costs (like a true power user). That said, download and install my Google search navigator script, then do a google search.

Key strokes

google search key strokes

shift + < = (previous page)
shift + > = (next page)
alt + s = (focus search form)
alt + 0 - 9 = (navigate to result number)

Try it out, let me know what you think. If it doesn’t suit your style, uninstall it, or write your own. Keep in mind this runs ONLY on google.com since I am unaware of the side-effects it may have on international search pages. Cheers :)

Hi Dustin. I had fun playing with this, but I had to uninstall it. I use the personalized Google homepage (iGoogle) and the style changes caused the display to squash up in the center.

Maybe I’ll poke it it myself to change that and learn greasemonkey while I am at it. :)

    Hey Jim,
Yeah… I couldn’t think of a simple way to exclude other pages that are also on google.com using the exclude parameter that greasemonkey allows. If anyone wants to help figure out a good way to do that, let me know and I’ll modify the file.

Could you not set the allowed domain(s) to *google.com/search* ?
That would stop it running on google.com/ig, maps.google.com/maps?f=, etc, etc

Aaron, I set the script up to do that (just go to “Manage user scripts”) and as far as I can tell it only runs on google searches. Works really fine for me, and my iGoogle looks fine.

BTW, if you are an international user like I am, and want google.com to be the google page you use, just click on the bottom right link, called “Google.com in English”. That selection will also be saved in a cookie.
