Reveal your hidden talents to MC Diaz

Monday, January 9th, 2006

Have you ever seen that comcast internet commercial with that guy singing a love song while playing the drums. Soon afterward a phrase pops up saying Want to lose your reputation faster.

Topping off the 12 days of Christmas series here on DustinDiaz.com - The twelth and final day is at hand by requesting your most impressive inner hidden talents to the Web Standards with Imagination Community. That’s right, I’m looking for thee most impressive and perhaps humerous talent from my audience. I’m also looking for more than just a story of a few written words telling me you can do something. I’ll need to either see photo’s, maybe video’s, or some sort of audio revealing your talent.

Of course this wouldn’t be no good if I didn’t let you in on one of my own secret talents.

Attention Podcasters

This one’s for you. This audio clip I’m releasing is in fact - yours truly! Dustin Diaz is - the human beatbox machine.

No way dude, that is pretty damn impressive. I’ll be getting a few beers in you and hearing that live during SXSW, oh yeah.

  2. Dustin Diaz

Justin, I’ve already been told that Paul Scrivens and Mike Rundle threw down some major beats and rhymes last year… I may just have to hit up that scene after throwing back a few. I will admit that the audio just doesn’t give the full effect - so surely I’ll be doing a few live presentations at SxSW! It’s bound to be a hit.

  3. Elliot Swan

Hahahaha that is so awesome. Quite impressive actually.

How does lipsynching U2’s Christmas “Baby Please Come Home” along with a bunch of other crap, putting it on a DVD, then wrapping it up and bringing it as a gift for one of those gift-exchanges sound? Believe it or not it was quite a hit, people were even wanting to buy extra copies…

I’d consider uploading part of it for this contest, but I’d probably break a bunch of copyright laws…That and I’d have to ask the other guy who did it with me for permission.

But trust me, it’s awesome. I’ll have to think of something else I can do for this contest though….

  4. Jim A.

You may just win this section of your own contest, Dustin!

Thankfully, I have no talents nor any interest in pod casting, so I have no need to reveal any thing the nature of which you requested. ;)

  5. ChristianGeek

I agree Jim, I will let you win your own contest ;)

  6. Alex Leonard

hehe. that’s wicked. very nice job man. i don’t think i could come anywhere close to doing something like that.

my own hobby/love other than web design is making music. with a computer. i released an album back in october, but have only just got it online now. it’s free to download at http://ebauche.net/free_music_incomplete_watch_movement.php

It’s not such a quick thing to glance at, more like 69 minutes of ambient relaxation (I hope). But sure I’m loving being able to spread the word like this - it’s a better way of letting people hear it than asking them to go to a record shop in Dublin, Ireland. Much better.

  7. Matt

Damn man - that’s awesome! You’ll have to pass that talent onto your kids to ensure it’s never lost.

When I’m not running my web biz, I play drums in a jazz band called Jazz Conspiracy here in Chicago. I’d like to submit one of our tracks to the contest, a burnin’ number called “A Day In Vienna”:

Maybe we should Dustin as a featured soloist on our upcoming ablum…

    Cheers folks!

  8. Jason Beaird

Wow! That was excellent! It seems like everybody is wussing out on this one, so I’ll have to have a few of your sponsored beverages tonight and think about which of my embarrassing secret talents I could perform…

  9. Wench

Okay, that one worked. Here’s a take two of my original submission.

    http://www.techwench.com/blog/entry/for_my_pops/

Keep in mind that when you listen to this, it was right after my dad went into the hospital and we didn’t think he would make it, so I was fighting back the tears during this. He made it another 4 months.

    Don’t laugh.

  10. Dustin Diaz

    Hey,
thanks for the great comments on my first podcast. I knew it would become a hit.

So far the entries are looking good. Keep them coming!

  11. Jeff Croft

Damn, Dustin! That is absolutely one of the best beat beatboxes I’ve ever heard. Nice work!

  12. Dustin Diaz

    Wench,
So it’s true. That really is you singing! Wow. That’s great. It took me a while to find proof, Rest assured. Pretty cool.

    Jeff,
I’m just flattered ;). Now if only I could flow…I would make up a rhyme about you that went something like “He’s Crofty!”

  13. Alex Leonard

    Hey Matt,

Really liked the track. Very nice indeed. Very clear production and tight playing all around.

Very nice work. Nice site too. You should have a donate now button on there!

    Alex

  14. Wench

Man, I can’t get a break anywhere. No one ever believes me without “proof”. Am I just that untrustworthy? :P

  15. Dustin Diaz

Wench, to be fair on my behalf. I did in fact say that I was going to be looking for proof on everyone’s entry. I was only doing my research :)

  16. Wench

Heh. Yeah, okay. I’ll give you that one.

Oh, and I almost forgot, Matt, I heart jazz, and the only thing that would make your song cooler is more cowbell! :)

  17. Jason Beaird

I know I’m probably going to regret this someday…

    Numa Numa

    PS - There’s (simulated) cowbell.

  18. Dustin Diaz

OH…MY…GOSH! Jason. You Rule! I may just have to end the contest unless anyone else is willing to put them self on the line in the next day or two. That was drop dead awesome man! I was literally laughing outlout in my cube at work. How many corona’s did you say you had? Lol.

  19. Jason Beaird

No Coronas… That was all due to lack of sleep. I was going to come up with something last night, but I ended up working till 1am on a project we had to kick out. I woke up this morning with the Numa Numa song in my head and decided to make my first (and probably last) lip synching webcam music video.

  20. Matt

Alex and Wench - thanks for the kind words! Jazz lovers should check out redjazz.com for great podcasts of what’s happening in jazz these days (that’s worth listening to).

As for cowbell, that’s a big inside-joke in the group, how’d you know? Just incase anybody wants to watch the skit: http://gorillamask.net/morecowbell.shtml (excuse the dirty adds, it’s the only working link I could find).

Jason, you did that sober? I bow befoe you.

  21. Dustin Diaz

Yes, the cow bell was quite the pheonomenom! For goodness sake people, I need more cow bell!

  22. Justin Perkins

I got a fever baby and the only cure is more cowbell!

  23. Elliot Swan

I think I know who won.

  24. Jason Beaird

I love that skit. My wife actually asked me what the “more cowbell” thing was all about. I told her, “I put my pants on like the her - one leg at a time, but once my pants are on, I make stupid videos.” (No, I didn’t really say that, but I wanted to.)

I’m glad you all enjoyed it.
