Measure Map is not Dope anymore

Friday, August 11th, 2006

Earlier this year back in January I wrote an entry about how dope Measure Map is. Well, ever since this dandy stats application was sold to those guys over on the other side of the valley, Measure Map is… um, well; to put it kindly, “not so dope anymore.”

Over the last few (several actually) months I’ve been lucky enough to ever get a peak at my website statistics. Due to some server setup inefficiencies I was forced to rely on a third party stats program. That is where Measure Map came in, and failed me. It is in fact a bit dissappointing that Google has failed to at least throw some money at it to provide extra servers - but not even that has happened. Instead I received this kind and “not so humorous anymore” note:

A kind note from Google

Ok. Fine. It was free. Whatever. I can live with that. This is the perfect case for that ‘ol saying “you get what you pay for.” With that in mind, I purchased a license to Mint, spent a half hour setting things up, and I must say, I am happy with what I’m using. Thanks Shaun, you freed me from my life without statistics.

I used to use both Measure Map and Mint together, but when I launched my reboot back in May I didn’t feel like sticking all that Measure Map code in my site again. So, I haven’t used it since.

Mint, however, totally rocks. I have two licenses myself and plan on buying another one soon for another site which may or may not involve massive pinkness

What peppers do you have on there?

Having not used MeasureMap, I can’t speak ill of it. I can say, however that a self-hosted stat solution seems to make the most sense, rather than spread the loading time delay over several domains.

    Dustin:

Yeah I have been having the same problems with MM and am seriously considering whether or not to hold out or make a switch to Mint.

  4. Johan

A treasure map is always DOPE!

  5. Mike Stickel

I’ve been using both MM and Mint for a while now. The unfortunate thing for MM is that since Google bought them there has been little to no visible development done. Every so often I check the forums they have but there is very little going on there from my point of view.

Mint on the other hand has an extremely active community behind it and while development seems to have slowed I can only hope it’s a temporary delay (and Shaun’s not being distracted by his next app).

I think it’s pretty obvious MM was bought just to sink it into the ground, you know with Google putting all their eggs on Urchin (which happens to be free and reports some serious stats).

I too have been keeping an eye on the ever increasing uselessness of Measure Map. What happened to the hay day of the website stat app extravaganzas. Where are all the baloons? What happened to the inflatable pink gorillas? It seems nobody is interested anymore. For tracking stats on a blog, Google analytics is a bit like brushing your teeth with a push-broom. Mint is an excellent alternative, but as Mike said, application and pepper development doesn’t seem to be zipping along anymore. Measure map was something entirely different. It took a creative approach to stats that applied directly to what we wanted a blog stats app to be. I’m not sure if Google meant to kill Measure Map though. I prefer to think that Google was the Abominable Snowman and that Measure Map was a bunny rabbit named “george”.

Dude you’ll totatlly mess up your gums if you do that.

  9. Johan

Duda Duda Duda Dee - Oh stats really make my day!

  10. Brendon K

Has anyone actually tried sending an email to measuremap@google.com to see what they would have to say on the lifelessness of this matter?

  11. Jason Beaird

Hey Justin, how about brushing my teeth with the Oral-G toothbrush instead? (I know what you’re thinking, and yes, this is a safe link for work.)

  12. Sally Carson

@Justin - This thought had occurred to me too, but if Google planned on burying MeasureMap, why would they have hired Veen on full time? Hush money? Now I’m getting a hilarious image of Google keeping Veen wined and dined, bearskin rug by the fireplace, Cristal on tap, I don’t know an endless flow of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies? Madness!

I really enjoyed MM whilst it was not with google, but to the weeks leading up to it I did start to notice that it was getting a little less responsive and that there wasn’t much communication coming out of the guys either as well.

I’d really appreciate if we could get some information about the road ahead for MM.

Inspired by Brendon’s comment, I decided to write google myself and see what was up. Here’s my email to them from August 22nd.

Hello Google,I’m a big fan of most of the work you’ve been doing lately, but it seems you have completely neglected Measure Map. I’ve been getting the “Sorry, I’m having issues.” message for months now and the line has lost every bit of humor it may have had. Are you ever going to fix this system, or did you just buy it so that you could watch it die and get more Analytics users? I’m very disappointed with what I’ve seen so far.-Jason Beaird

A few hours ago I got this reply:

Hello Jason,Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are aware of this issue and have been and will continue working to resolve it. As we continue to try to change and improve the backbone of the Measure Map system, the alpha version of the product has been extremely unstable. Unfortunately we do not have a timeline for when the stability and reliability that we would like to see will be achieved.Sincerely,Measure Map Support

I don’t really think that resolved anything at all.

  15. Dustin Diaz

Wow, thanks for posting that Jason. They indeed have the “support team” well funded if you received a reply in such a short time-frame. I just hope they put developers on it. Either way though, I scrapped all my measure map code from my blog and installed mint stats. Things are going pretty good with that.

  16. Lloyd D Budd

Measure Map is currently down until Wednesday, August 30.

The danger with Mint is the additional load it creates on your own server.

  17. Mahesh Babu.R

It seems that Measure map is being sucked in to Analytics :)

  18. Alex Leonard

I don’t know, Google Analytics serves me perfectly well. Plenty of information on it and easy to use.

Best part is it’s free. Also, I’m quite sure it doesn’t leave my mouth with that tender ‘who-brushed-my-teeth-with-a-push-broom’ feeling.
