What happened to ProsperMag?

Thursday, April 28th, 2005

It’s a rare case when a website goes CSS, only to let a few months go by and switch back to a ghetto table layout. Once known as a bold magazine company that hired a standards matty to do their website is now blogging in table fashion. They used to even have sIFR action. It just blows my mind that companies can actually go backwards in the development of their website. Especially on the subject of web standards. See ProsperMag.com.

Geez that is just sick. They most likely had a developer that was actually interested in standards, so he likely spent a lot of time working the site to a sweet standards-based design.

This person probably was replaced and the replcaement was some fool who said, “God what is this, I’ve got a lot of work to do in Dreamweaver.”. F’in bullshit. I’ve done a lot of work at my current employer’s website over the last year and I would hate to see it revert back to a crappy table layout (like it was when I arrived). It’s got to be frustrating as hell for the old developer at ProsperMag.

What’s wrong with table-based layouts or designs that come from Dreamweaver? They are typically only tested in IE and then pushed live.

What does it look like in Firefox on Mac? Pure crap.

That’s a full screen view. Yes, horizontal scroll bars, a content area that starts right in the vertical center of the screen and a navigation that starts somewhere like -500 pixels from the left margin.

    Real cool.

Yea. I think people underestimate the 23% of users that surf at 800×600. When are people going to realize that number isn’t going to go down.

If anything, people who surf the net are getting older and older (eg, my grandparents are fidling with it now) and they need vision.

Not to mention the post I put up about teenagers leaning back in their chairs. People’s eye vision just doesn’t get better. If anything this will be a generation of bad eyes due to the increased amount of time we spend on the net. I see 800×600 sticking with us for a long time.

But yea, you know some idiot developer was like “I can’t work with this…the whole design is in css! My goodness what do I do?”

Anyone else have an example of a company going backwards?

Man, that’s a real shame. They had one of the best uses of sIFR out there! Guess we’ll have to remove them from the wiki and distributed documentation now :(

So where’s your new design Dustin? I think I remeber you saying something about “getting excited” for the CSS Reboot, no?

Just giving you some s*!t, cause it’s fun ;)
